David, isn’t the problem here that Obama maintains a rhetorical opposition to the Bush/Cheney policy while, in fact, producing results that differ very little in actual substance?  I think, based on your post, that you’d agree.

But maybe it just points to the problem with this debate:  It’s basically over.  The reason Obama won’t take the genuinely opposite approach as Bush/Cheney is that to hold such a belief would be immensely unpopular with the mainstream and potentially damaging to his overall agenda.  Eight years after 9/11, Democrats still fear being labeled as soft on terrorists.

Essentially, Obama is trying to wiggle his way out of this without pissing off the people on your side of the aisle too much.  But you are right about the media set-up, though perhaps it is just another instance of Obama-coddling by an over-nurturing Fourth Estate.

    Hi Chris,

I agree with your first and third paragraphs.

As to the second, remember that Obama won the election taking a much stronger stance against the Bush/Cheney policies. I don’t think opposing the indefinite detention of suspects without any court oversight, for example, is such an unpopular position. At any rate, it’s certainly hard to test this without having a genuine public debate. (And besides, rights are not supposed to depend on popular support.)
