Well put Hector.  I sort of touched upon the same thing in an earlier post today.  Namely, you are right about Obama:  he remains likeable enough to garner support from the middle while ruling squarely from the left.

However, I believe that he’s been able to do so because so few of his recently implemented policies are seen (as yet) to be tangibly and adversely affecting the daily lives of average Americans.  Because of this, he is still able to use rhetorical loop-de-loops designed to obfuscate the details inside most of his proposals.  Another Heller quote is analogous to Obama’s methods:

“When someone asks me why I have crabapples in my cheeks, I point out that they are rubber balls, and they are in my hands. I don’t know if it ever worked, though, because it’s hard to make people understand you when you have crabapples in your cheeks.”

Obama has muddled along like this in his speeches and policies to great effect, but that time is coming to an end with health care.  He will have to make some hard, detailed choices and the results will be felt by the average American on a daily basis.  This will serve to hurt his popularity for a while.  At the best, he’ll be able to pin the unpopular stuff on Congress, but then that could result in the chamber switching over to the GOP.  At worst, his Presidency could be crippled.
